  • A pictoral tour of my garden!

    purple tree

It's been very exciting watching my garden start to bloom and discovering what different trees and plants we have. Unfortunately, this is a pictoral tour because I don't know what any of them are called. Above and below are pictures of my favorite tree which is in the back yard near where I'm going to plant the vegetable garden.

Here's another flowering tree we have up front, it's just starting to bloom with a few white flowers.

I planted my Easter Lilies in the front yard the other day. They're starting to look wilty already, but hopefully they'll come back nicely next year.

And nearby are these little white flowers surrounding another tree.

Here's a tree that's in the side yard, we have a great view of it from the two back bedrooms. There's another in the back yard by the lower patio. My sister-in-law Denise swears they are Dogwoods. Actually, I think she put $100 down on it. (But I'd be willing to accept payment in coconut cream pie should she be wrong.)

All over the yard we have these little purple flowers. I've been thinking of them as violets, they're a little brighter purple than they look in the pictures. My mom says they're probably just weeds, but I don't care because I think they're pretty.

We also have a lot of this pink flowering bushes all over the yard that are starting to come out.pink flowering bushes

And the thing we have the most of I actually know what they're called! Rhododendruns, because my grandfather has them. Ironically the one that looks the least healthy has been blooming first.

One of my very favorite things is our lilac bush, which is just starting to bloom! It smells amazing and I've already clipped a few sprays to dry for sachets.

The first tiny little green leaves are starting to poke up in the little white urns on the upper patio, too. I planted some mixed flower seeds in these and the big pot out front, so we'll see how that goes. I wanted to test them a few places before deciding if I just want to buy baby impatien plants to put in the other two.

I also started some tomato plants in yogurt cups and basil in a pot. This weekend is the opening weekend of the West Chester Grower's Market, which I'm going to be writing a blog for as well. So I'm going to get some more plants for my vegetable garden there. I already have seeds for lettuce, green beans and squash. I'm also going to plant a few garlic bulbs for a natural pesticide. Anyone have more suggestions?

And the most successful thing in my yard so far, a beautiful basket that was a gift from my friend Erin. :)

If anyone knows what any of the plants I can't identify are, or has advice on how to care for anything please let me know!

  • I have a yard!

     House 030

After many years with apartment balconies, and small, dying potted plants that were constant even as my desks (and jobs!) changed, I actually have a real, live yard. I'm very excited about gardening, and think I have a nice design to start with. There are many spring-flowering plants in our yard. Sorry, I can't identify them yet. All I can tell you right now is that we have a lot of the pretty-flowering bush my grandfather has in front of his house all over our yard. But I look forward to identifying our plants and learning about them next spring! The groupings of trees seem well suited to an English country garden, which is well suited to my proclivities. Our house is a split level with a sort of cottage-y feel to it, which makes me feel a little bit like I'm in an Anne of Green Gables novel or possibly a Jane Austen adaptation.

I'm starting out with the book You Grow Girl, which was a birthday gift from my good friend Elizabeth who has a beautiful yard herself. I'm trying to learn more about gardening this fall and winter before starting out strong next spring. I started my compost bin today so that come spring I should have lots of lovely humus to enrich my soil and give me a good start to growing. This works out well since this is the first time in 5 years we haven't had a garbage disposal and so we have lots of stinky produce trash just waiting to be naturally recycled in my own yard! I have big plans to chart which parts of the yard get how much sunlight to best decide where to put my vegetable garden and where other plants should go.

I got some of my first seeds today - some dying daisy-heads from my neighbor Helen who said if I bury them I should get daisies in the spring. I'm thinking about planting them near some rocks next to our driveway in the front yard. And my mother-in-law is going to bring some seeds down next time she visits from some flowers she planted from seeds she got from her nursury-owner-friend Inga. I forget what they are right now. I'm clearly going to have to get better with remembering the names of plants.

So, for now enjoy some pictures of my yard!

About Me

  • I have my first yard and am excited to discover what plants inhabit it, add a few more, grow vegetables and compost. All with a steady soundtrack of punk rock tunes on my MP3 player.
